Mr. Nieman - Week of 14 Sept

Welcome back to school! Great to see familiar faces and greet the new ones. I'm excited about all the wonderful things CTC is doing and plans to do.

Please carefully read the info below. I want to be sure all parents and students understand the nature and purpose of how I use the CTC Homework Board. Each teacher will likely use the board differently and add their own content as they choose.

I will update this blog once a week (either on Thurs or Fri) and include assignments, due dates, and other details for the following week.

All the classes I teach will be addressed - MS Bible /Christian Ed, 7th Life Science and 8th US History. PE, Chapel, Garden info, etc... will not be mentioned on this blog.

I will not revise or alter this board once published. I will try to forecast as best I can what will be due and when for the following week. At times, changes in class will be made - a quiz may be rescheduled - and those changes will be made orally in class. I will always try to give students more time by pushing an assignment back if a change needs to be made.

HW indicates homework.
WKSHT indicates a worksheet given in class. Quizzes, tests, and other assignments will be labeled as such.

The dates you see are the due dates. I may give an assignment the previous day or even a few days in advance. Again, the dates you see listed are always the due date, not the date the assignment was issued. Also, the dates you see will usually match the dates you see listed on the on-line grade book.

Feel free to email me if you have questions. Thanks!

Dave Nieman

We've wrapped up our look at mammals and organ systems. I hope that our time at Body Worlds sparked some good conversations at home - hopefully not around the dinner table. Mammal Project presentations were great, too!

Today, Fri 8 May, I'll give a brief open-note quiz on Mammals. This should be easy for the students as they can use the material they studied with Ms Zeringue last week.

Next, we'll begin a combined unit on Ch's 17 & 18 on Ecology and Ecosystems. We'll also watch several episodes of Planet Earth and students will journal about each episode.

Packets will be given out today and we'll work through the material over the next few weeks.

8th US History

I hope the DC trip was more than what you expected! We all had a great time and it was a personal pleasure of mine to visit some of my old stomping grounds and share some stories with the kids. A really great time.

CTC MS has formally kicked off the Multi-Cultural Fair (MCF). All grades are working on this project and MS teachers are sharing different roles to make it a real culminating and cross-curricular activity. 8th graders are divided into pairs, each focusing on a region of the US (New England, the south,...). Detailed instructions were given on Tues 5 May. Should be great!

Concurrently with the MFC, I'm keeping students moving through their history text. Bear in mind morning classes are shortened M/T/W/TH for Sat-10 testing.

Assignments for both are as follows:

Mon 11 May - Ch 10 QUIZ & work on MCF

Tues 12 May - Begin Ch 11

Wed 13 May - Ch 11 DR packet due. MCF work day.

Thurs 14 May - MCF papers due. Continue in Ch 11

7th - Finishing 2 Peter and beginning Hebrews

8th - Wrapping up Route 66 work. Expect a unit test next week.

7th Life Science

We've just begun our Food Lab Unit. This is a fun - and based on last year's reaction - a popular look at the food we eat. We'll try our best to answer the question: Are we what we eat?

Thanks to those who brought $3; sorry we didn't quite start as soon as I hoped. If you're son or daughter has not brought $3, please have them do so this week. We'll go shopping with the money and then analyze the contents of kids' favorite foods.

A significant packet was given on Thurs 19 Mar. It has all the details of the assignments and the due dates - they are as follows - the class together decided these dates:

Assignment # Due Date Brief Description

1 Fr1 27 Mar 3-day Food Journal
2 Thurs 26 Mar Watch Super Size Me
3 Tues 24 Mar Eat out with your parents
4 Fri 27 Mar Website Review

Please support this lesson for the next week at home! The kids will get so much more out of it if YOU are involved and interested in the subject. Here's some ideas:
  • Take your kids shopping
  • Do the food journal with them
  • Suggest alternate meals and restaurants
  • Watch Super Size Me (rated PG) with your kids - host a movie night with other 7th graders.
Lastly, I am totally open to your thoughts, criticism and ideas about this assignment. My goal is not to indoctrinate my students, but to have they weigh what it is they are eating and think about nutrition, food, and exercise. Let me know what you think!

8th USH

We've just started CH 8 and the class is broken into 5 groups - each group (of 2 or 3 students) will give a 40 min presentation to the class on the section they chose.

Teaching dates are as follows:

Section / Group # Date to Teach

1 Mon 23 Mar
2 Tues 24 Mar
3 Wed 25 Mar

4 Fri 27 Mar

Assignment details and expectations, along with a grading rubric, have been given. There are 160 points possible. Encourage your son or daughter to work collaboratively with others in therir group.
